Bhaskraycharya College of Applied Sciences

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences named after a great mathematician of 12th Century was set up in October, 1995. The college is affiliated to the University of Delhi and is funded by Government of National Territory of Delhi. The main goal of the institution is to train students in various self oriented professional courses like Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Electronics, Instrumentation and Food Technology, Polymer Science, Microbiology and Physics. With a short span of time, college has achieved remarkable recognition as one of the few excellent institutions in Delhi.

The college is housed in a spacious new building sprawled over ten acres at Sector 2, Dwarka, New Delhi. The new college campus has twelve departments out of which ten departments have 3 laboratories each. Department of Food Technology has a pilot plant for specialised training of students. In addition to this there is a Conference Room, an Audio Visual Hall, Library spanning three separate floors, an open Air Theatre and indoor and outdoor sports facility. In addition to classroom lectures, the course curriculum also includes seminars, industrial tour, project training, etc. The project helps in experiencing the working culture in the industry whereas the seminars provide first hand information and an opportunity to interact with the emminent personalities of industries.

[edit] Courses

[edit] B.Sc.(H) Biomedical Science

The Course: B.Sc(H) Biomedical Science programme, three year degree programme, has been designed to train the undergraduate students in interdisciplinary studies related to Biological Sciences. The training emparted in this course will empower the students to either enter for higher studies (i.e M.Sc,MSc-Ph.D. programme in Biomedical Sciences run by the university of Delhi or by other Universities) or join the job where knowledge related to medicine, biotechnology, microbiology or other allied fiels is rquired. subject offered are physiology, biophysics, biochemistry etc. pretty nice informative course.

[edit] B.Sc.(H) Computer Science

Keeping in view, the demand of software professionals in the field of Information Technology (IT), the University of Delhi has introduced 3 year degree course viz., Bachelor of Science(hons) Computer Science in its constituent colleges. Our college is contributing in its own inimitable way to the development of IT by conducting the B.Sc.(hons) Computer Science course. The course provides rigorous foundations of the concepts of Computer Science and Information Technology. Electives in the 6th semester offers flexibility to the students to specialize in a chosen area. In the final semester, the students also get an opportunity to do a project. Hence, a combination of concepts and training of software tools equips the students to adapt to ever changing Technology. This three year full time degree course is conducted in 6 semesters.

[edit] Electronics

In the recent years, there has been a sharp decline in the pure Sciences stream and a phenomenal increase in the applied diploma courses. The main reason for this kind of change in attitude is obvious as the students opting for pure sciences courses find themselves with bleak overall career prospects. To overcome this carrier obstacle faced by science students, Delhi University has started new applied streams, which include Bachelor of Applied Sciences (B.A.Sc.) course in Electronics. These semi-vocational graduate courses give the students an option to get employment after graduation. Students can pursue M.B.A or M.C.A after this course.

[edit] Food Technology

Development and applications of Science are important in improving the quality of life, combating hunger and malnutrition. Food Science and Technology which is concerned with the production, preservation, processing and utilization of food is of primary relevance to developing countries which are i predominantly agricultural. Special attention is to be needed to the development of agricultural i and food processing industries so that Socio-economically appropriate technologies be applied for the conservation and processing of foods. In India, processed foods accounts for only 10-12% of the available raw materials compared to 85-90% in the developed countries. The consumption of processed foods is expected to double by 2000 A.D. Research and Development in the area of Food Science and Technology is likely to contribute to the creation of a sound technological basis for essential developmental parameters. Among them are technology acquisition, improved productivity and food quality, product diversification, cost reduction in processing, energy conservation, by-product utilization and better marketing for both internal consumption and export. Extrusion technology, Controlled atmosphere storage, Individual quick freezing, Irradiation, Post harvest technology, Microwave and thermal processing, Freeze drying, Ultra filtration and Reverse osmosis, Fermentation, Aseptic packaging, production of ready-to-eat convenient foods, a better control over processing by computerization, production of fabricated foods, super critical fluid extraction systems are some techniques and processes applied in Food industries. However, a large proportion of the food industry is in the form of small units, which needs to be improved particularly because of obsolete machinery, lack of latest know-how, non- recovery of by products etc. Technological upgradation is therefore necessary to obtain a standard quality product, especially with regard to nutritive value, microbial safety and desireable sensory attributes.

[edit] Instrumentation

In B.A.Sc(H) Instrumentation, the structure of syllabus is such that besides the basic subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, students are taught Computer programming, Analog and digital circuit, semiconductor physics, Microprocessors and Microcomputers. The students are up-dated with the latest knowledge of semi conductor Electronics and Integrated circuit. These include p-n diode, Varactor Diode, Light Emitting diode, Bipolar Junction transistor, Phototransistor, function Field effect transistor and metal oxide semiconductor. The primary emphasis is on the bipolar junction transistor in both the analog and digital mode. The course structure has been designed in such a way that each device is introduced by presenting a simple physical picture of the internal behavior of the device, followed by its characterization and analysis of the device as a circuit element in both analog and digital applications.

[edit] Polymer Science

B.Sc(H) Polymer Chemistry programme, three year degree programme, in Polymer Science has been designed by the Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences in consultation with an expert committee which included Prof. A.k.Ghosh,Head,Dept.of Polymer Science,IIT,Delhi, Prof.A.k.Gupta,Head,Dept. of Polymer Science,Delhi College of Engg., Prof. A.k.Misra,Director,IIT,Powai(Mumbai).The training imparted in this course will equip the students to either enter for higher studies or take up job in industry. The training in Polymer Science will develop manpower for the fast expanding Polymer Industry.
