Bharath University (Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research) was established with the aim of imparting higher knowledge in Science and Technology to the aspiring boys and girls so that they can emerge as competent scientists, engineers and technologists of repute. BIST was started in the year 1984, the institute was awarded the deemed university status by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India in 2003 and hence the name was changed to Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research. In September 2006, it was renamed as Bharath University as per a new decree issued by the University Grants Commission enabling deemed universities to change their name to 'university'. Some of its technical courses have been accredited by All India Council for Technical Education. The institute has earned over the years an enviable reputation for excellence; thanks to instruction by the highly qualified academics of distinction, staffing the various faculties. The uniquely designed special programmes offered by the Institute have already placed it on par with some of its counterparts, both at home and aboard. The Institute is committed to the grand task of providing quality education, which will transform the students into efficient and successful careerists. Students who have graduated from BIST are already serving in responsible positions, in India and aboard.

The University lays special emphasis on providing the best infrastructure for learning on all its campuses. All the Institutions of the group are provided with spacious buildings to accommodate reception, office and classrooms, staff-rooms, drawing halls, laboratories, workshops, libraries, computer centers, auditoriums, conference halls, examination halls, recreation centers for staff and students, sports rooms, dispensaries, canteens, hostels placement cells etc. There are separate Under-graduate and Post-graduate blocks.
