His Highness Maharaja Thakore Shri Sir Dr. Bhagvatsinghji Sahib, Maharaja Thakore Sahib of Gondal, GCSI, GCIE, Kaiser-i-Hind, MD, FRCP, Hon. DCL , FRS, FRSSE, MRAS, MRI (24 October 1865-9 March 1944) was an immensely progressive and enlightened Maharaja of Gondal and the only ruler of a princely state to take a medical degree. He ruled for an incredible seventy-five years, from 1869 to his death in 1944. After succeeding to his majority in 1884, he immediately worked on reforming Gondal. He reformed the state administration, developed its resources, erected schools, colleges and hospitals, provided free and compulsory education for both men and women through university, built technical schools for engineers and training facilities for labourers. As well, he improved the regional livestock through modern animal husbandry, built dams and irrigation networks and introduced sewage, plumbing, telegraphs, telephone cables and electricity. Amazingly, he was so effective as a ruler that his subjects did not need to pay any taxes whatsoever.
