Thanks for your note! As you probably know, the new census methodology for race and ethnicity (instituted for the 2000 census) treats the "racial" categories ("White" "Black" "American Indian and Alaska Native" "Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander" "Asian" "Other" and "Multiple Races") as completely distinct from the "ethnicity" of "Hispanic." (see here for more info.) So not only does the census not publish data for any "non-white Hispanic" population, but I think such a category would be invalid given how the 2000 questionnaire was written.

I have made a couple maps of the "Hispanic" population distribution; they are here:

Personally, I think that it might be better to point out that many "hispanics" do in fact identify as "white" than to try to define (and map) "white" as a category which by definition excludes "hispanics." Yes?

And sorry for all the scare quotes here.. but I think it's important to remember that in the end there's no deeper meaning to census "race" and "ethnicity" than what's reported on census forms.

Let me know if you have any further thoughts -- I'd love to work on more population-distribution maps, if there are maps that can in fact be made. Alas! --Citynoise 23:28, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

I should have looked around a bit more; you're right that the data is there. In fact I've found data for all race and ethnicity categories down to place level, including non-white hispanic, non-hispanic black, and all the rest. (Oh, and my data comes from the packages produced by Geolytics.. a commercial service that allows you to extract census data however you'd like, much better than the tedium of the public Census webpages. It's rather pricey, however; I have access through the university.) I could certainly make a map using this data.. although I'd have to wait until I have some free time, as getting Geolytics data onto national maps is a bit cumbersome and monopolizes my computer for a while. (Geolytics's market is definitely marketers and businessfolk, not demographers.)

Now the question is whether it's the right map to make.. you said it would be "more representative of the 'White American' population." But as I suggested before, I think it's problematic to say that "white" shouldn't include white hispanics. I don't think it would be appropriate to include in the "White American" article. I don't know about Geolytics at Stanford.. here it was bought by the urban planning school; perhaps the folks at the Stanford Urban Studies program would have ideas?

You're definitely right that non-hispanic white data is more relevant for understanding civil-rights concerns and demographics. My question is about what map to include in an article entitled "White American." One problem is that the article as a whole was off-base and inaccurate. I've just edited it, hopefully making it a bit better: take a look. Instead of wondering about the map, how about we take turns polishing that article, and if a map for "non-hispanic whites" seems indispensable I'll try to make one. (but since it would probably be difficult to see an 8% difference visually, perhaps a "hispanic white" map would be more helpful.) Perhaps we should make a section about "white" vs. "non-hispanic", or more generally "subgroups within 'white.'" But perhaps it makes more sense to add those discussions to other articles, since I doubt that the "White American" article gets much traffic. Thanks for uploading Image:Chicano_Power.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
