[edit] History

The first school opened in the Bewbush neighbourhood was the Bewbush County First School opened in 1978, offering education for your children in the neighbourhood. Growth was limited initially, with just 147 pupils on roll by 1984. Work soon began on neighbouring school, Bewbush County Middle School, which opened as an annexe of West Green Primary School initially, gaining its own leadership by 1985.[1]

The two schools ran as separate entities, feeding into Ifield Community College until 2004. A nearby first school was also opened in Bewbush at Waterfield First School. However, the change of age of transfer in Crawley in 2004 led to the schools both being closed. A new primary school opened on the Bewbush Middle School site, with a headteacher taking responsibility for the full range of primary-aged pupils.[2]

[edit] School Site

The school has an extended campus which is shared with the nearby Children's Centre (in the former First School buildings). The 16 class bases around the building are based around shared working areas. The campus was modified for primary school use following the closure of the Middle School in 2004.

[edit] News Coverage

In 2005, a teacher at the school, Mr Peter Shotton, was suspended from his duties during a police investigation into abuse claims dating back to 1995.[3] Mr Shotton was charged with various incidents during May and June of that year, resulting in a court case in early 2007. [4]A nine-day trial in February 2007 saw him convicted on counts, and in April 2007 he was imprisoned for a period of 11 years.[5]
