[edit] Name?

It troubles me that any biographical subject, but especially a woman, is referred to within an article by their first name. For women in particular, it can be seen as sexist and infantalizing. However, I left it since her surname changes from "Brentano" to "von Arnim" in 1811. I couldn't tell which works were done under which name (and there was a male pseudonym as well). I hope the next editor to work on this article is able to address this problem. -- Lisasmall 04:26, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Citations?

I added info about a defunct Texas town named for her, with a good citation. Unfortunately, it's the only specific citation in the whole piece. There was a "resources" section and I had to add a "references" section to make the footnote come up in the right place. However, they should be combined and the unspecified "resources," including the Nutall Encyclopedia, should be made into specific citations. I hope the next editor to work on this article is able to address this problem. -- Lisasmall 04:26, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Further Information

The German WP article is a treasure of further information. I do not suggest you copy it, but you could provide a link there; some of your readers may have at least some reading knowledge of the language, and there are more pictures. Apparently there even exist a BvA society, editing a yearbook etc - such things may interest readers, because it is a sign of perceived importance and appreciation, isn't it?

[edit] Name

Her first name "Elisabeth" was used in family circles in a familiar colloquial variant form "Elisabettina", and then a short form of that: hence she came to refer to herself as "Bettine" (yes, with "-e") and that is also mainly used in modern scholarly literature when she appears.147.142.186.54 19:22, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Published Correspondences

You get a different impression when reading English and German Wp. articles on her: here you sort of "downplay" her editing activities, there it is stated that they were "stark bearbeitet" (very literally: "strongly worked on") - whom to believe ?

It also says there were several other other such collections besides that with Goethe, including the Prussian king!

I also wonder why she would entitle the one that became famous (German WP. also says "coloured the popular image of Goethe considerably afer its publication in 1835") as Briefwechsel/letter-exchange/correspondence with a CHILD, given that she first met him in 1806, and that the letters are said to date from the time post-that-moment. "Kind"/"child" may have been used then as synonymous with "young girl", meaning any age from childhood to "teenage"/adolescence to "young woman/adult age" - I am not sure. But I find it confusing, because since I had found that book while browsing shelves in the library of the German language department of the oldest University in Germany in my speartime a number of years ago and read some letters, I had always assumed he had actually corresponded with a "child" (in our modern sense) - albeit a very gifted one - and wondered why he would have written more than one or too very brief pieces as one could have imagined for a "generous wise Uncle" ! (And don't say that was an act of "infantizing" her etc, since she choose the word herself !)147.142.186.54 19:22, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Family Home

...and a last one for you from me: I just found that the family home of the "Baron B." aristocratic clan still exists today (and they sell there own wine there...). They make explicit reference to illustrious visitors such as Goethe on there homepage which you may find (with pictures) under " www.brentano.de " [[1]] .
