Betsey Bayless

Betsey Bayless was the Republican Secretary of State of Arizona from September 5, 1997 until January 6, 2003. She was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Jane Dee Hull. She was elected to a full term November 3, 1998.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Bayless is a third generation Arizonan. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in Latin American Studies and Spanish from the University of Arizona, where as a Phi Beta Kappa, she received the Freeman Medal as outstanding graduate in 1966. She earned her master’s in Public Administration at Arizona State University. During her career in the Arizona state government, she also served as Director of the state Department of Administration, and as Acting Director of the state Department of Revenue.
