[edit] Response
Dear Wikimancer,
Thank you for raising your concerns with me. I agree that my name violates the user name policy. I was unaware of this policy, and I apologize. I would also like to apologize for my previous anonymous advertisement of my website, www.bestdelegate.com. I am new to Wikipedia; before, I thought such casual posts were acceptable, but now I wold like to be a regular contributor, and I realize that my actions have violated Wikipedia's policies.
I will change my user name, but I would like to ask whether my proposed alternative user name, BestDelegate, is acceptable.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Ryan
Hi - I ran into this checking through a maintenance category. I would advise against anything that mentions your website's name at all - perhaps 'Ryan2008' would be good? It's availible. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 14:09, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Re: your username
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: "Use of Wikipedia for promotion of a company or group is not permitted, and accounts that do this will be blocked. Use of a company or group name as a username is not explicitly prohibited, but it is not recommended, and depending on the circumstances may be seen as a problem". After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?
I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.
You have several options freely available to you:
- If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
- If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Wikipedia administrators usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
- You can keep your contributions history under a new username. Visit Wikipedia:Changing username and follow the guidelines there.
Additionally, your apparent interest in contributing to Model United Nations definitely gets into a conflict of interest issue. ("Similarly, editing with a possible conflict of interest – for example, editing an article about your employer – is not disallowed, but anyone wishing to do so is advised to first accumulate some editing experience in unrelated areas.") I would be especially concerned about (presumably) your inappropriate anonymous advertisement of the website earlier on at the article's discussion page.
