The award was bifurcated by gender in 2005, since which year Best Female and a Best Male Athlete with a Disability ESPY Awards have been presented.
Over the three years of the award, its voting panel was composed variously of fans; sportswriters and broadcasters, sports executives, and retired sportspersons, termed collectively experts; and ESPN personalities. The ESPY Awards ceremony is conducted in June and awards conferred reflected performance and achievement over the twelve months previous to presentation[1].
