Bessacarr is a large village, located in the south-east of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is one of the most affluent areas in the region. Due to its respected name, the village has expanded hugely since the Second World War, and is now one of the largest villages in the country. Its population was 19,803 at the 2001 census.
[edit] West Bessacarr
This is the largest area, and is south of Bawtry Road. Whilst some of the estate was built in the 1930s or earlier, the majority of the building occurred in the 1960s and 70s. Some recent development has occurred in the late 1990s, with flats being increasingly popular, to the derision of some residents.
The centre of West Bessacarr is arguably Nostell Place shops, which boasts a bank, Co-Op and several takeaways amongst others. Nearby is a pub and the local library, together with a church and Willow Primary School. Some other shops are situated further up Alston Road. There is a tennis club off Stoops Lane, and a garden centre formally occupied part of Carr Lane.
West Bessacarr is part of the cycle path from Doncaster to Rossington, known locally as the "red path" owing to the colour of its tarmac. Public transport is provided by First Mainline routes 58 and 55B, with the direct 89 bus through the estates being withdrawn in 2004. It also has one of the best schools in Doncaster, Bessacarr Primary.
[edit] Bessacarr Grange
Bessacarr Grange is a relatively new area, and is situated the other side of the M18 Motorway from West Bessacarr. Most of the housing was erected in the 1990s, and local amenities stretch to a post box.
