[edit] Greetings...

Hello, Beruthiel, and welcome to Wikipedia!

To get started, click on the link that says "welcome".
I (and the rest of us here, too!) hope you like it here and decide to stay!
Good luck and happy editing! Wwwhatsup (talk) 11:16, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
  • You might want to consider uploading your pics to Wikimedia Commons rather than Wikipedia. It's a little more robust and still usable by Wikipedians. Wwwhatsup (talk) 11:20, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Thankyou very much for the welcome! I'm still finding my feet; this is all very new and strange... but I'll give Wikipedia Commons a look, and try sorting it out. Tell me, is there much point submitting photos to Commons that are incredibly niche-interest shots? Beruthiel (talk) 11:24, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely. There are no restrictions on commons, beyond the 'free' license, and you'll be able to likely find a suitable niche category. On Wikipedia, by contrast, images that are 'orphaned' i.e. not in current use in articles, may well get deleted. I've never used it but there is a tool: Commonist for uploading multiple images at once. Wwwhatsup (talk) 11:51, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Ah. Well, what I was planning on doing was finding specific stub-articles that I could add pictures to; rather than submitting "orphan" images (if I'm understanding your explanation properly). But most of what I can help out with are articles on obscure Australian National Parks. Not really what you'd call "high demand"; they'd really only fit one article each... hence I wondered if there was much point uploading to the wider Commons project. Seemed a bit silly. [edit] Adoption?

Hey there, Beruthiel! I noticed you're looking for someone to adopt you, and I wanted to offer my services as an experienced editor. So that you can know a little about me, I've been an editor on Wikipedia for over a year. I mainly specialize in background work for the encyclopedia, such as deletion debates, anti-vandalism patrols, and many other things, including helping out new users such as yourself! Now, that doesn't mean I can't write articles, of course. I have a wide knowledge of policies and am pretty good at putting words together, if I do say so myself. ;-) I hope that you'll be interested in being my adoptee, but if you'd rather have a shot at someone else, you are more than welcome to do so. Just let me know either way, and I hope you have a great time here on Wikipedia! Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:33, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey, sorry for the long wait! I've been out for the week at a leadership conference that I'd completely forgotten about when I posted the above message. I'm glad to hear that you're interested in the program. :-) It'll take me a little time to get things set up for you, but I think you're just in time to work along side my other adoptee, who I contacted at the same time as you. I will let you know when I have things ready to go. In the meantime, though, you can go ahead and check out Adoption HQ - that's where we'll be coordinating most of this program. You'll see that I have some information posted for User:Katieishme - she is the other adoptee you'll be working with. The information I have under her header is essentially the same as what you need at this point - the only difference is in the recommended WikiProjects near the bottom, and I've made a note of that in your section. Just go ahead and edit some pages based on what you already know, and we'll get started soon! Welcome to Wikipedia! Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:26, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I am back, and getting things ready to go. Just so you know, I've added your userpage to Category:Wikipedians who use StatusBot - what this does is allow an automatic account known as a Bot to check your contributions every now on then to see if you're online or not. It then updates a little box I've got under your name at User:Hersfold/Adopt, so that I can tell if you're around or not. It's not the most reliable system, because the original StatusBot died, and the replacement (User:Chris G Bot 3) isn't running at top speed, so updates tend to be a bit slow, if they happen at all. But, it's the best we have. If you'd rather not use it, just take the category link off of your userpage; it's no problem.
Anyway, I'm going to give you and Katie another day to look around and edit some things, and then we can get things started tomorrow! Talk to you then! Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:04, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Report card!

Hey, Beruthiel. Just to let you know, I've taken a look at what you've done so far and made a short report on your progress so far - you're doing pretty good, but there are still a lot of things we need to work on. Don't worry, though, that's a good thing, and the reason I had you edit on your own for a while. Unfortunately, I don't have a lesson prepared for what I want to work with you and Katie on first, so I won't have that ready until tomorrow. Sorry for the continuing delays! Anyway, take a look at the adoption center for my notes. Please let me know what your questions are, whatever they are. You can post on my main talk page, on the adoption center's talk page, or below this - I'll check all three. I'll talk to you tomorrow, but until then, happy editing as always! Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:21, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I've got the new lesson up as well now. Let me know if anything isn't clear. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Checking in

Hey, Beruthiel. I haven't seen that you've edited anything recently, so just wanted to check in to see how you were doing. Let me know when you get this. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:29, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Beruthiel, I haven't seen you around the project for over two weeks now. Your email isn't activated, so this is the only means I have to contact you. If you're still interested in continuing the adoption program, please let me know as soon as you can. In order for the program to work effectively, you need to be on a little more often. Hope everything is going well for you otherwise. Let me know when you're back online. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:59, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Beruthiel, since I still haven't heard from you, I'm going to assume that you're either on an extended unannounced Wikibreak or you've simply left the project. If this isn't the case, welcome back, and let me know if you'd still like to continue the adoption program. I've removed the adoption templates from your pages and mine for the time being. Hope to see you around the 'pedia. Hersfold (t/a/c) 07:41, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
