Talk:Berwick, East Sussex
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I should be interested to know the evidence for the pronunciation 'BUR-wick'. It is not recorded in J.C.Wells's Longman Pronouncing Dictionary (200) nor Daniel Jones's Everyman's English Pronouncing Dictionary (1977; revised A.C.Gimson), which are the authorities I usually use. I want to include this information in a Guide I am writing to usage in the English language. If it is the standard pronunciation among the locals, I of course accept that; but it would be interesting to know whether there is any degree of variation, in or around the village or its area.
