KEEPING UP THE PACE: STAYING ON TOP IN THE 21ST CENTURY During 2005 a business plan was drawn up for Bergvliet High School which described what actions the school needed to take in order to ensure that it created the capacity to deliver on its mission of providing learners with an all-round education of world class, equipping them to play a constructive role in South Africa. Substantial progress has been made in implementing these plans. This includes: The installation of 25 interactive whiteboards (with plans for a further 15 by the end of 2007) – the most technologically advanced teaching tool available (includes live big screen internet access in classrooms); forming partnerships with local companies for marketing and fundraising purposes (which has seen BHS learners walk away with R 1000s in prizes and give-aways); improving the use and enjoyment of the sports facilities (sports pavilion and floodlights erected on the main fields, allowing day/night cricket and night games of rugby and soccer), the installation of a digital notice board in the main learner areas and most recently, a newly designed uniform (which does not include a tie, and where the shirts are not meant to be tucked in, making it up-to-date and extremely comfortable). Many more enhancements are planned, including an Astroturf, water-polo pool, learners’ canteen, new music/arts block and upgraded general facilities. Bergvliet High School is a happening school. The learners want to be at school because they enjoy their day, the teachers are highly professional and the leadership is dynamic and exciting.
