Reading (pronunciation (help·info)) is a large town, unitary authority area (the Borough of Reading) and urban area in Berkshire, England. It is at the confluence of the River Thames and River Kennet, midway between London and Swindon off the M4 motorway. There is a town near Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America that is named after this Reading. The name Reading is pronounced /ˈrɛdɪŋ/ to rhyme with bedding).

Reading was an important national centre in the medieval period, as the site of an important monastery with strong royal connections, but suffered economic damage during the 17th century from which it took a long time to recover. Today it is again an important commercial centre, with strong links to information technology and insurance. It is also a university town, with two universities and a large student population.

There are a total of 105 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal along its 87 miles (140 km) length from Bristol to the River Thames, including 6 on the navigable section of the River Avon from Bristol to Bath and 9 on the navigable section of the River Kennet to its confluence with the Thames near Reading. The remaining 90 locks lie along the 57 miles (92 km) of canal.

The Kennet and Avon Canal was built between 1794 and 1810 by John Rennie, to convey commercial barges carrying a variety of cargoes. It later fell into disuse and disrepair before being restored from 1970 to 1990. It is now fully navigable, mostly for leisure boating.

Slough (pronunciation (help·info); IPA ˈslaʊ) is a town and unitary authority (Borough of Slough) in England. In the 2001 census the population was 119,070 (est. 122,000 in 2006). It is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the UK, situated some 22 miles (35 km) west of central London and 20 miles (32 km) east of Reading.

It is home to the Slough Trading Estate, the United Kingdom's first such estate, the largest in single ownership, and one of the largest in Europe overall. This, coupled with extensive transport links, makes it one of the most important business centres in the south east of England. It is also home to the largest campus of Thames Valley University.

Windsor Castle, in Windsor in the English county of Berkshire, is the largest inhabited castle in the world and, dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, is the oldest in continuous occupation. The castle's floor area is approximately 484,000 square feet (about 45,000 square metres).

Together with Buckingham Palace in London and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, it is one of the principal official residences of the British monarch. Queen Elizabeth II spends many weekends of the year at the castle, using it for both state and private entertaining. Her other two residences, Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle, are the Royal Family's private homes.
