[edit] Early Life and Influences
Bertie grew up in the Inner-East Sydney suburbs of Bondi and Paddington. She began playing African percussion at the age of twelve and found her true expression in guitar at the age of fifteen.
Taking inspiration from an eclectic array of musicians such as Björk, Erykah Badu, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, and Radiohead, Bertie's songs are at once heartfelt and uniquely her own.[2]
[edit] The Music, Airplay and Collaborations
“With Favourite Jeans, I just decided to write a song about where I live,” Bertie says. “I walk out in the street with my jeans that are ripped to death, while everyone I pass is wearing PACK fashion. With everything being so trend-driven, there’s so much pressure to look fabulous and wear the latest designs, rather than what’s comfortable. For me, walking out my favorite splattered and worn jeans is my way of staying true to who I am.”
Bertie has amassed an impressive resume of musical credentials including collaborating with top Australian headliners, Something For Kate, Paul Mac, Ben Lee and Alex Lloyd, writing music for Australian films, and gaining heavy rotations on the country’s top radio stations: the national JJJ network and Popular mainstream Sydney station Nova 96.9.[3] Her most recent album 'Black' received positive reviews and demonstrated Blackman's move away from folk music to a focus on rock.[4]
