In 1983, the actress was forced to have her leg amputated, as result complications from a blood clot. This was written into the show, with Bert Bauer suffering the same illness. She remained on the show until the she died of complications from diabetes in 1985. The character's death occurred in March 1986 (she had been said to be visiting her sister-in-law Meta in the interim), during a tribute episode, in which she was mourned by her family, including her sons, attorney Michael Bauer and Dr. Edward "Ed" Bauer.
