Berote Khurd

Berote Khurd is subdivision of Berote Kalan Union Council in Abbottabad District in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan [1], it has a population of 2,500. As part of the local government reforms of 2000, Berote Khurd lost the status of Union Council and was merged into Berote Kalan.

[edit] Etymology
The name of the union council "Berote Khurd" means lesser Berote, this is to differentiate it from the larger settlement of "Berote Kalan". The words Khurd and Kalan (little and big) are administrative terminology dating back to Mughal times - to differentiate two areas with the same name, hence Birote Khurd means little Khurd (cf. Britannia major, "Greater Britain" and Britannia minor "Lesser Britain").

Berote Khurd is located in the east of Abbottabad district. To the east is the Kashmir region, to the south is Berote Kalan and to the north is Bakot.

The main tribes of Berote Khurd are the Lahral (a sub tribe of the Dhond Abbasi), Mojwal and Nikodrals. Others tribes are Awans, Gujjars, Seyeds among others.

The Qazi Sajawal link road from Basian (Birote), a highway called Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan Road from Swargali (a junction on the main Abbottabad-Murree Road), and the Hadhrat Molana Pir Fakir-u-llah Bakoti Road from Bakot provide transportation links to Birote Khurd. Historically this area was a transaction place for Birote Khurd people in winter 50 years ago but this tradition has died out. The floor water mills have also vanished during the 1970s, they were situated in Gandran ni Dheri, lower Naker Qutbal.
