[edit] Fictional character biography

Walton, a janitor living in Odyssey, first appeared in episode #106: "By Any Other Name", and has since become a regular character on the program (Walton's Janitoral Service's phone number is 555-6629). Though kind-hearted, Walton is somewhat cynical and grumpy, but is most widely known for his metaphorical humor and penchant for storytelling. He hosts B-TV, a Christian television show.

He is often heard complaining about how children at Whit's End touch the newly cleaned windows, smudging them. He also can be heard muttering things like, "Back in my day...." and "Why don't parents teach their kids to..." He uses plain and simple language and often gets confused with big words.

In the episode "Poor Loser" it is revealed that Bernard is a gifted chess player, beating Eugene seven times in a row. In the eighth game one of the kids at Whit's End interrupts the game by knocking over the board. Before the game was over Eugene had just put Bernard in check but Bernard said that things were not always what they seem. However after the game is ruined Bernard claims that Eugene had beaten him. It is unknown if Bernard was truly losing or if he threw the match to restore Eugene's confidence (Connie had asked him to do so before the episode began).

Common-sense Walton's foil is intellectual Eugene Meltsner; the two quarrel often, but remain friends, especially due to the revelation in episode #157: "Last of a Long Line" that the two are somewhat-distant cousins. This constant fighting is a result of Bernard's annoyance at Eugene's impratical tendencies and Eugene's superiority complex.
