The Berlin Marathon is an annual marathon in Berlin, the capital of Germany. It usually takes place on the last weekend in September. The "33rd Berlin Marathon" took place on September 24, 2006 for the runners, and on September 23 for inline skaters, power walkers, handbikers, wheelchair riders, and for the children's marathon (4.2195 km, or one-tenth of a full marathon). The first Berlin Marathon took place in 1974. On January 23, 2006 the five biggest marathons - Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon and New York City Marathon collectively launched the World Marathon Majors – a new series offering a $1 million prize purse to be split equally between the top male and female marathoners in the world.

The Berlin marathon has a flat course, which makes for a very fast race when the weather is right. Five times have world record times for marathon running been set in Berlin.
