At 11:55pm when the northbound high speed diesel tilt train City of Townsville from Brisbane, bound for Cairns, failed to slow down for a very sharp 60 km/h curve, derailing the train. The train was estimated as traveling 112 km/h at the time of the accident, but investigators are still undecided on the role a broken wheel played in the event.

Although seven of the train's passenger cars left the tracks, no fatalities were reported from this accident.
