[edit] WikiProject Children's Literature

Hi! I've created the children's literature wikiproject, and signed you up as a member because of your expressed interest. If you add {{user WikiProject Children's literature}} you'll be added to the list of WikiProject Children's literature participants.

The WikiProject main page is not a thing of beauty right now. I'm hoping for input from other project members, both to do the tasks and reorganize the page.

Even if you don't have time to do much work right now I'd love your feedback on my proposal at young adult books and category renaming. It's a big enough deal that I'd rather not do it unless there's some consensus that it's a good idea.

Welcome! Deborah-jl Talk 04:00, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia_talk:Censorship

A revised version of the proposed policy against censorship is now open for voting. Will you kindly review the policy and make your opinions known? Thank you very much. Loom91 10:30, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Freddie Mercury

I am afraid, I am no expert on this article. But, you can mention it on the talk page of the relevant article and try to make a verifiability backed consensus with other editors. Please review Wikipedia's policy of verifiability and citing sources. Go to Talk:Freddie Mercury. Regards, --Andy123(talk) 00:13, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

BengallRenaissanceEccentrica. I'm one of the people on the F M talk page. Personally, I dont even see the need to acknowledge Persian/Iranian on Mercury's page to begin with, as it mentions he is a Parsi (which signifies an Indian of Persian descent). Parsis feel pride in Persian heritage in addition to being proud Indians. This impression of mine strengthened when I read Sooni Taraporevala's book (herself a Parsi) Parsis: The Zoroastrians of India. Why dont we have disputes about them? The fact is, in my opinion, Freddie Mercury was very closed about his background and tried to portray himself as white British to the public. I think he made a really quick reference to "Persian" just to explain the exotic real name and stuff. There is also no way Parsis are Iranians. There genetic makeup shows a substantial amount of Gujarati ancestry as well as Persian ancestry. They have generally been agreed upon as an Indian community. I reverted it back to what it was previously. I dont know if you heard of Merle Oberon. She was a Eurasian with Sinhalese and British ancestry. All her career life, she hid this background and constantly stated that she was from Australia, specifically Tasmania. She even made a state visit there towards the end of her life to apparently "show people her birthplace and roots". After her death, all of this was debunked. We dont put her as Tasmanian on modern biographical records. I think, as this is an encyclopedia, that we should just mention the facts as they were and not try to dress them up to please a few fanatics. The BBC article on which most of them base their claim has itself been shown to be flawed as Brian May (a member of Queen himself, and a manager in the selling of Queen records everywhere) showed that it was still in customs and had yet to be resolved and had not been Permited in Iran as thought. I admire your effort though and thank you. If you want more information, read Freddie Mercury's Definitive Biography, if you can. However, its an English publication, so you might not get it here in the US or in India, if you live there. Thank you. I'm not an Indian fanatic by the way, I"m a Pakistani fan and an encyclopedian who records facts as opposed to opinions. - Afghan Historian 02:58, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza

Welcome, BengalRenaissanceEccentrica, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee, JoanneB, Titoxd and FireFox. The April elections have begun.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, please see the IRC Tutorial, which was written by one of our members. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Thanks! _-M o P-_ 00:21, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to welcome you as well. — nathanrdotcom (TCW) 05:05, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Writing in Bangla

I'm sorry but I've no idea how you write in Bangla either in the Bangla or the English wikipedia. Possibly kono special keyboard layout achhe, othoba special character use korte hoe. You can try asking at [[Wikipedia:Village Pump {technical)]]. I also see you are my age, how cute :) *hugs*. I hope you improve wikipedia's coverage of Bangla culture and other issues through your work. Ami Bangla wikipedia nie khub akta interested noi karon nobody uses internet in Bangla. Everyone will use the English wikipedia which is much more famous, comprehensive and well-maintained. Tell me something about yourself, akhon ki porchhis (I hope you are okay with tui)? From your userbox it seems you are at a international school program at pre-college level. Is that right?Loom91 06:40, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Santiniketan and others

Hi! Your points of concern are quite valid. In fact, I put up that "neutrality disputed" tag in that section quite a few days back. You go on with your edits. I will keep an eye.

Regarding Bangla fonts, the best unicode keyboard in "Avro keyboard". It has got a "phonetic" keyboard. You just type in English the pronounciation and it will be converted into Bengali fonts. I contributed some articles in Bengali wikipedia using that. It's fantastic. You can ask Ragib for further enquiry. He almost single-handedly maintains Bengali wikipedia.

Bye the way, the article Kolkata is a featured article candidate now. You can visit that page and say something. Bye, keep in touch.--Dwaipayanc 16:58, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S. Internet explorer supports Bangla fonts better than Firefox.--Dwaipayanc 17:01, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bengal etc

Hi! I read you comments in the talk page of Loom91. Please go on with an article on East Calcutta Wetlands. In fact, I had some mention of it in Kolkata, but had to remove on certain grounds. (eg most of them have been converted to gheri or bheri, the fishing farms. So by truest definition, they are not probably wetlands! At least, not wild wetlands. This was ponted out by Nichalp (talk · contribs) in peer review, and I had to agree and modify. Also, the ever increasing size of the article was a concern.) AFAIK, an International Baccalaurerate school is there in Kolkata, not sure if it's in Poilan. Bengali user board is a great idea. You can develope a West Bengal portal, from where there will be links to articles as well as boards. See Portal:Kerala for guidance. Please also see Portal:India and Portal:Bangladesh. In fact, you can consult with users from Bangladesh, if you are intersted in creating a common Bengali board. Ragib (talk · contribs) and Shmitra (talk · contribs) are very active users from Bangladesh, besides many more. I share with you the comment that if at all the majority of people understand rock philosphy and history here in WB. A request: try to restrict your comments/messages in English. Other non-Bengali users can also read your talks, and communicate. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 05:49, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bangla

Hi, I'm an admin in both English and Bangla wikipedias, and I overheard (or should I say "overread") your question in in Loom's talk page regarding Bangla writing. We are promoting Bangla actively in bn wiki, which has reached 1210+ articles recently (700 in the last month).

Anyway, for helping newbies with Bangla writing, I've written a tutorial, you can get that here. I use the Avro phonetic keyboard, which allows you to write unicode phonetically. So, to write ভারত, you'd type bh-a-r-o-t. To write complex stuff like ঈশ্বর, you'd have to type I-sh-w-o-r. It's amazingly easy to use, and you can get it from www.omicronlab.com or elsewhere. You will also have to enable Bangla rendering in Windows XP, a tutorial of which appears when you install avro.

Thanks, and hope to see you in bn wiki. --Ragib 06:10, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Patha Bhavana

Hey! It was a nice artilce. Not "stupid", as you claimed. It has substantial content. Secrioning may improve the look. See this school article which has got much less content than Patha Bhavana, but is sectioned, so that ot appears to be better, while in reality, Patha Bhavana is much more informative! Bye.--Dwaipayanc 09:23, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Images

see Wikipedia:Uploading_images --Ragib 23:30, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank you very much BengalRenaissanceEccentrica 23:33, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for my delay in responding your query on image uploading. Anyway, Ragib has solved the prob. Feel free to ask anytime.
I just went through the article Khoai by you. It was intersting. A request, try to categorize any article you create. If you write about West Bengal, many categories on West Bengal and Kolkata have been created. See Category:West Bengal. You can create more categories. However, try to make categories accotding to the ideal sections mentioned in a state article , as laid out in Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian states. So, you can make categoris like Category:Economy of West Bengal, Category:Flora and fauna of West Bengal etc. A good example is the categories under Kerala. See Category:Kerala. Portal:Kerala can be a nice example if you want to rejuvinate wikiproject Bengal. I am also giving a similar message to Loom91 (talk · contribs) as you rwo seem to be quite interested. Bye!--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:02, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

[edit] How are you doing?

Everything smooth? :) It's a big relief for me, our Madhyamik results are finally out. Though I was never one to be tensed about exam results, I must say passing the exam has been very lucrative :D How're your studies? Our schools will begin shortly. This years madhyamik has thrown some very surprising and suspicious results. For the first time in a long time, the pass rate in Madhyamik has actually dipped, and even that by a staggering 5%!

What's even more astonishing, 6 spots in the top ten were captured by students from Bankura Zilla School, including 1, 2 and 3!!! Either the school has multiple papers tested by miraculously lenient teachers, or the conspiracy theories are indeed true and the results were rigged to project Bankura as a highly devoloped region/appease the Education Minister who happens to be from the school. A friend from my school, Soham Karmakar has come eighth. Well, Take care. Loom91 06:44, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

oh my...i have not been able to do any extra things for about the last three weeks or so. I work for about 16 hours in the weekend as a result most of my free time is gone. I have to finish 2 theses and one presentation and one portfolio by june 23. Oh my. but i feel very psychedelic (because of the weather which interestingly is similar to a "Kalboishakhi" of Bengal) today thus i thought of leaving everything for a day and relax. Madhyamiks are always an interesting time. Bankura may not be the most developed region but i love its landscape. Was it a girl or a boy who got 1st place this year? Man, i cant wait to arrive in India. I have decided that I am gonna do my extended essay on "The Potential for West Bengal to be a centre for Sustainable Tourism", which means I am gonna be visiting a lot of government offices and stuff. Fun Fun indeed.

For now, I see a red door and I want to Paint it Black.

PS: Have you ever heard the music of Cassini's Division? although the wiki article says they try to break the monotonous cycle of classic rock by introducing elements of punk/alternative, frankly they sound the exact same as another B grade band...let me know your opinion.

BengalRenaissanceEccentrica 18:06, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

As far as I can remember, the top 10 did not contain more than 1 or 2 girls, and even that towards the tail end. As always, the pass percentage was substantially lower for girls than boys. I can accept that in total girls study less because of social factors, but what explains the fact that they are also beaten in the race to the top?
Today the Higher Secondary results came out. The highest mark from Koochbihar was 999 out of 1000! 99.9% total marks. That means the true percentage is [{(999+68)/1200}*100%]=88.92%. Wow! For the first time HS has exceeded Madhyamik in pass percentage. I haven't heard Cassini's Division. Are they famous?
BTW, Are you sure that you will like your essay to depend on governmental clerks? They are not exactly famous for their helpfulness... Studies are getting harder in here also. Physics is the only subject I'm somewhat satisfied about. Mathematics is a disaster, I'm failing to keep up with the homework. I unsubscribed from the WikiEN-l mailing list because I don't have the time to read the high traffic list anymore.
My Madhyamik results have earned me a mobile. It's a nice-looking dude. I'll email you my number (I daren't post it on a wiki, it is said that an unseen evil lurks in the dark corners of Wikipedia, and his number is 666). Loom91 06:20, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your userboxes

Hi,

I had some comments about your userboxes. I see that you have several identical boxes proclaiming that you are interested in agnosticism. Are you sure you do want to use multiple boxes saying the same thing? Also, you have a Babel box for both bn-N and bn-3, but since bn-N is considered a higher skill level than bn-3 these two are mutually exclusive. Loom91 09:53, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Actually i hadnt notice them myself so thanks a lot for pointing them out. It would be nice to also get some help getting them organized instead of being thrown all around the page. where can i get info on this? (I DONT KNOW HTML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the only language i know is turing and nobody uses it so...)BengalRenaissanceEccentrica 21:04, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

You can see my userpage for how I organised these. Loom91 07:06, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Another thing, I now have an account at Flickr, [1]. I'll like to know what you think, please criticise with no holds barred ;) Loom91 10:39, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but since you have subst'd a portion of your userboxes it is now beyond my skill to manage them. One thing you can do is dig up the template versions of the subst'd userboxes and use those, they will make the page much easier to organise. I used a low end digicam, HP Photosmart M307. [edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I happened upon User:BengaliWikiGeek looking for a Bengali speaker, but you seem to be inactive. In any case, I redirected your old user and talk pages here, as you've undergone a name change and others may try to find you. I'll leave it to you to merge the content if you want, though you seem to have things set up again pretty well here. Anyway, leave a message on my talk page if you sign in again soon. I may still want help with Mataal. Thanks!--Kchase02 T 20:18, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!

[edit] Re: Poush Mela

Hi! How are you? I went through Poush Mela and added categories. You can write about the History of the mela (started in 1894 etc) and what happens there (cultural stuffs, as well as community prayers, crafts etc). this is a short article on Poush Mela. here is another. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:38, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

I think you should keep the article more generic.. Poush mela existed long before Shantiniketan was created. And it happens at many different places including kenduli (see the baul mela mentioned in this article Jayadeva_birth_controversy) and other baul gatherings on the occation of the "poush sankranti".. which is the last day of the month of poush). .. see the bengali article on poush sankranti:

http://bn.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A6%AA%E0%A7%8C%E0%A6%B7_%E0%A6%B8%E0%A6%82%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%B0%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A8%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%BF.

Shantiniketan however definitely played a great role in making it internationally famous and added lot of ravindrik culture to it and marketing it with a somewhat different color. if you have enough material you may as well write a separate article on the poush mela of shantiniketan.. but till you have enough material let it be a part of a general article on poush mela.--Dr.saptarshi 03:49, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

By the way "Harvest season" is more explicitly marked by Nabanna (festival).. Bauls hardly harvest crops.. BUt they would get better alms during the harvest season.. so there may be some indirect reason related to that.. But Baul cultures are very old and related to many secret rituals and difficult to say why it may happen on such a date of the bengali calender. --Dr.saptarshi 03:54, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

Thanks for dropping by. I am rather impressed by your profile, and you seem very passionate about certain things! We have a lot in common too, which is great (I too love On the Road, which, we know, isn't surprising at all!). But I am no regular at Wiki. I wish I had more time, or if I were as young as you are. But stay in touch. Take care. Hobson Jobson (talk) 11:08, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] bengali wikipedia

Care to take a look at the [Bangla wikipediatoo]? We have very few editors from WB there, and definitely need more people to contribute. If you are Bengali peaople and speak, read and write in Bengali, please contribute bengali wikipedia also. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jayantanth (talkcontribs) 10:43, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
