This is a list of Recipients of the Royal Victorian Chain. The Royal Victorian Chain is an award in the British honours system. It was instituted in 1902 by King Edward VII as "a pre-eminent mark of the Sovereign's esteem and affection towards such persons as His Majesty specially desired to honour".[1] The Royal Victorian Chain does not confer upon its recipients any style or title and does not carry precedence within any Commonwealth honours system. It is not part of the Royal Victorian Order.[1]
The first eleven awards of the Royal Victorian Chain marked Edward VII's coronation: ten were awarded to members of the British and European royal families and the eleventh was awarded to Frederick Temple, the Archbishop of Canterbury who presided at the coronation. Whilst there is no official limitation on its grant, the Royal Victorian Chain has been awarded to members of the British royal family (most recently to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh); to monarchs, presidents and princes from other countries, such as Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and Charles de Gaulle, President of France; and to officers of State or officials of the Royal Household such as the Archbishops of Canterbury or York (eight awards), Lord Chamberlain (six awards) or Earl Marshal (three awards). It has also been awarded to two Canadian Governors General (Vincent Massey and Roland Michener) and one Fijian Governor General (George Cakobau).
