- Karl Benz, German automobile engineer and inventor who was awarded the 1886 patent for the first automobile, the Benz Patent Motorwagen, many engine and automobile inventions, and the flat engine, (also spelled Carl occasionally)
- Bertha Benz (née, Ringer), the first person to drive an automobile a long distance (over 106 km or 66 miles), investor in the first business of and soon thereafter married to Karl Benz
- Benz & Cie., founded in 1883, the most important of several companies founded by Karl Benz (sometimes with partners or his sons), which became the largest automobile manufacturer in the world by the end of the nineteenth century and, that merged with Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in 1926 to become Daimler-Benz, which branded all vehicles produced thereafter as, Mercedes-Benz
