[edit] Languages

One of three languages can be learnt. Students pick either Japanese, Indonesian or Greek and learn it for 3 periods a week for Year 7 and 8 with the option to quit learning it in Year 9, however it is encouraged to continue with Japanese as in VCE, Japanese is significantly marked up; and the school wishes to attain the highest possible VCE results.

[edit] Sporting

In receipt of a new sports stadium, Bentleigh Secondary College has a strong focus on sporting and is not an academically strong school.

[edit] Gifted & Talented Program

In an effort to entice students to study at Bentleigh Secondary College, the college has implemented a Gifted & Talented Program whereby students, based on the results of a standardised test undertaken before entering high school, of high intellect or promise are grouped into one class. This enables a learning environment where the class can move at a faster pace as the teacher does not have to focus on struggling students.

[edit] Performing Arts

Performing arts at Bentleigh Secondary College consists of music, drama and dance. With the option to study an instrument, there are several well-developed school bands. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the most senior of the bands made up of brass, woodwind and percussion players. The Jazz Band consists of students who have been playing for at least one year and often perform on dance and concert nights. There is also a Year Seven Band.
Every year in the third term, a school production is performed. Past productions have included Fame, The Witches (which toured local primary schools), and Alice In Wonderland.

[edit] Fire incident

Around 3am on February 10th 2008 two police officers saw smoke coming from the school and car leaving this area. It's being treated as suspicious. The fire has caused more than $100,000 in damage but would have been a lot worse if the officers hadn't called the brigade in such a hurry.[1]
