Bennington is a census-designated place (CDP) in Bennington County, Vermont, United States. It is located entirely within the town of Bennington. The population was 9,168 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²), all land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 9,168 people, 3,824 households, and 2,225 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 726.9/km² (1,883.7/mi²). There were 4,081 housing units at an average density of 323.5/km² (838.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.07% White, 0.51% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population.
There were 3,824 households out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.6 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $30,591, and the median income for a family was $39,225. Males had a median income of $30,451 versus $22,135 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $16,507. About 11.8% of families and 15.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.9% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.
