[edit] Background
Benedictine High School was founded as Benedictine College in 1911 by the Benedictine monks from Belmont Abbey located in Belmont, North Carolina. An integral part of the school is their athletic program, especially their basketball team, formerly coached by the late Virginia basketball legend Warren Rutledge. Over the years the school has developed multiple Division I collegiate athletes who have succeeded in achieving a high level of performance. Prominent graduates of the school include former congressman Thomas Bliley, football coach Bobby Ross, NBA assistant coach John Kuester, Clemson graduate Vernon Hamilton, and NFL offensive tackle Patrick Estes.
