Ben Bamfuchile
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ben Bamfuchile (1960 – 27 December 2007) was a football (soccer) manager from Zambia. Bamfuchile coached and led two different teams to the African Cup of Nations; the Zambia national football team in the 2000 African Cup of Nations, and the Namibia national football team in 2008. He managed Namibia from 2006 until his death.[1]
Bamfuchile became a sports hero in Namibia after he led the country's national team to a 3-2 victory over Ethiopia.[1] The win qualified Namibia for the African Nations Cup finals.[1] However, he resigned from his position in early December 2007 and returned to his native Zambia.
[edit] Death
Bamfuchile died on December 27, 2007, of a short illness in the city of Kitwe, Zambia, just 3 weeks before the start of the 2008 African Cup of Nations.[1] He was survived by his wife and six children.[1] Namibian midfielder Sydney Plaatjies said, "We're doing it for him...Obviously we're doing it for the country as well, but I think we all have that in mind. He contributed a lot for Namibia and for all of us as individual players."[1]
Bamfuchile was replaced as coach of the Namibia national football team by Dutchman Arie Schans.[1]
