[edit] Northern military district
It is formed on June 29, 1951 by the way of renaming Belomorsky Military District [and the BMVO was formed from the ArkVO? - so the Northern district was basically just a renamed BMVO?] based on Arkhangelsk Military District (originally created on the January 24 1946 from the operational head-quarters of the 2nd Shock Army returning from Germany) operational head-quarters in Kem', from January 1946 relocated to Petrozavodsk. Operational head-quarters of the 14th Army was used to bring the Northern Military District up to strength [was the 14th Army disbanded to do this or did it still exist?]. Initially it included the territories of Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic (since 1956, Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic), Murmansk Oblast, since April 4, 1956 - Arkhangelsk and Vologda Oblasts and Komi ASSR. Headquarters of the military district were located in Petrozavodsk. On March 18, 1960 it was disbanded, and its territory transferred to Ural and Leningrad Military Districts.
Commanding officers:
- Meretskov Kiril Afanasevich (1951 - 1954)
- Kolpakchi Vladimir Yakovlevich (1954 - 1956)
- Stuchenko Andrey Trofimovich (1956 - 1960)[1] you may find this one interesting. He commanded two cavalry and two infantry divisions during WWII--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♥♦♣ 07:28, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

- The MD borders changed, but basically yes the Northern district was basically just a renamed BMVO - this is routine due to changes in birth-rate/population census and the needs of the MDs to provide enough conscripts to the units they administer.
- Whenever you see that something was created from operational head-quarters (upravleniye) it means the former formation was disbanded. However, it simply means the formation is removed from the Active Army OOB. It can be recreated as a lower readiness category formation somewhere else a week later! For the purpose of the MD the 14 A was disbanded on that date--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♥♦♣ 07:25, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
