Belwar Dissengulp is a fictional character created by R.A. Salvatore. He appears in three novels set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. His first appearance is in Homeland, the first book of the Dark Elf Trilogy, and he reappears in Exile, the second book in the trilogy, as well as Starless Night and Siege of Darkness, both part of the Legacy of the Drow quartet. He belongs to a race called svirfneblin (deep gnome) and lives in the Underdark city Blingdenstone.
[edit] The Dark Elf Trilogy
Belwar Dissengulp was the leader of mining party near the dark elf city Menzoberranzan. When the party was attacked by a dark elf patrol including Drizzt Do'Urden and lead by Drizzt's brother, Dinin Do'Urden, he was one of the only survivors. Drizzt was able to convince his brother to let Belwar go, but Dinin insisted both Belwar's hands be cut off. After the death of Drizzt's father, Drizzt fled into Underdark and took refuge in Blingdenstone, where Belwar took him in. To replace his lost hands, the svirfneblin had given Belwar an enchanted pickaxe and an enchanted hammer to cap his stumps.
[edit] Legacy of the Drow
When Catti-brie ventured into the Underdark to save Drizzt, Belwar gave her shelter in Blingdenstone and helped her reach Menzoberranzan. When the dark elves marched on Mithral Hall, Drizzt's home, Belwar convinced the svirfneblin to go to Drizzt's aid.
