[edit] Plot outline
After a failed attempt to communicate with a caller with a very thick French accent, Frasier closes his show to learn that the lecture that Niles was scheduled to give has been cancelled, leaving the brothers with a free night. They decide to go to dinner together; much to their surprise, however, they see Martin dining at the same restaurant with a female companion, having previously told the brothers that he was going to his favourite bar to meet his friends. Believing Martin to be on a secret date, they are surprised when the woman bursts in to tears and quickly leaves the restaurant - and are even more astonished to recognise the woman as Marion Lawler, an old family friend of their parents whom the Cranes broke contact with several years before, whilst the brothers were still children.
This chance meeting prompts Niles to return to his childhood journals, having remembered that Martin and their mother Hester were arguing near-constantly around the same time that they broke contact with the Lawlers. He becomes convinced, in reading his journals, that Martin and Marion were having an affair; Frasier is quick to dismiss this, but is disconcerted by Niles' accusations, and when Martin accidentally overhears part of their conversation Daphne tactlessly reveals Niles' theory. Martin is initially outraged, but upon learning that Niles was about to call an aunt to confirm his theory, confesses that he cheated on their mother. Niles and Frasier are shocked, but whilst Niles quickly adjusts to the situation Frasier takes the revelation hard; clearly favouring his mother and taking her side, he admits that despite his difficult relationship with Martin he has always respected his father's integrity, a respect that this recent revelation has shattered.
Soon after, however, Marion arrives at the apartment to visit Martin, and Frasier, in a hostile mood, informs Marion that he knows the secret. He doesn't reveal the entirety of what Martin told him, however, and Marion inadvertently reveals that it was not Martin and Marion who had the affair, but Hester and Marion's husband. Shaken, Frasier confronts Martin with this news, and in doing so reveals that he understands Martin's anger and humiliation, as his ex-wife had also had an affair, something that Martin was previously unaware. Martin admits the truth, claiming that he was largely responsible for Hester's infidelity and that he had only been trying to protect her. The experience has not been entirely painful, however, as both men realise that their shared experience has brought them closer together; they now have something in common.
