Bellamy Pirates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bellamy Pirates (ベラミー海賊団, Beramī Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Bellamy the Hyena.

The Bellamy Pirates are attempting to usher in a "New Age" where pirates don't search for dream treasures like the One Piece and instead focus on the treasures around them. According to Sarquiss, all of the Bellamy crew come from North Blue. They are looking for strong pirates to join their cause, and laugh at anyone still stuck in what they call the "Age of Dreams". The leader, Bellamy, is considered a big-time rookie.

They were originally led by Donquixote Doflamingo, one of the Shichibukai. He, like the rest of the crew, believes in the New Age.

[edit] Part in the Story

The Bellamy Pirates make their first appearance on the island of Jaya, in Mock Town. Luffy, Zoro and Nami are in town searching for information about the legendary Sky Island, which brings them into conflict with Bellamy. Confronting the Straw-hats in a local bar, Bellamy declares that he intended to discover if Luffy was worthy of helping to usher in the New Age. However, as soon as Nami asked for information about Sky Island, he rejected that notion, and instead taunted them along with the rest of the bar patrons. Despite the taunting getting rather violent, Luffy and Zoro chose not to fight back, mirroring an action of Shanks' earlier in the series. After they left, Bellamy chose not to pursue them, thinking them to be weak.

Later in the story, the Bellamy crew again confronts the Straw-hats. Bellamy is told of Monteblanc Cricket's recovery of several golden artifacts, and decides to take them from him. Cricket, along with his helpers, The Saruyama Alliance are badly injured in the ensuing conflict. Seeking revenge, Luffy rushes back to Mock Town. At this point, the latest bounty posters arrive in Mock Town, revealing Luffy's one hundred-million Belli bounty and Zoro's sixty-million Belli bounty. When a local drunk shows the posters to Bellamy, the confident pirate concludes that they were fakes made to scare him. Luffy arrives in town soon after and challenges Bellamy for Cricket's gold. Defeating him with a single punch, Luffy proves the accuracy of his bounty.

Upon hearing of Bellamy's defeat, Donquixote Doflamingo travels to Mock Town and uses a strange puppeteer-like ability to force Sarquiss to apparently kill his captain, claiming that he dishonored his flag.

[edit] Pirate Flag

The Bellamy Pirates bear two flags--one is Donquixote's flag, while the other is Bellamy's personal flag.

Donquixote's flag is a crossed-out smiley face with a wide grin showing teeth. Sarquiss has this image tattooed on his chest. This same symbol is seen for the human auction grounds (at least the one in Grove 1), heavily suggesting that they are run by Donquixote (at least indirectly).

Bellamy's flag is a pair of red lips against crossbones with the tongue sticking out.

[edit] Ship

The Bellamy pirates' ship, New Witch's Tongue, is a medium sized vessel. Its figure head is based on Doflamingos flag. It was only shown briefly and had no apparent special features.

[edit] Crew Information

[edit] Bellamy

Captain (55,000,000 beli bounty)

Bellamy "The Hyena" (ベラミー Beramī?) is the captain of the crew and has a 55,000,000 Beli bounty. Bellamy earned his nickname from his trademark grin and his reputation for scavenging riches from other pirates, much like a hyena scavenges its food. Bellamy's character is one that is arrogant, violent and vain, but significantly humbled when facing more powerful foes, as he revealed to Donquixote Doflamingo that he only engages in fights that he knows he can win. This later led to his defeat by Monkey D. Luffy, whom Bellamy thought was weak. Bellamy and his pirate crew play a significant role in the Jaya Arc of the series.

After the end of the Skypiea arc, the true leader of the Bellamy Pirates, Donquixote Doflamingo travels to Jaya to kick Bellamy out of his crew and forces Sarquiss to attack and apparently kill him "as a lesson," for disgracing his flag.

Doflamingo's last words to Bellamy were as follows:

But you know Bellamy... this is what I like about you! Hahaha! The new era is almost upon us. Go do as you like. However... I don't need you on my side.

Trivia

  • Bellamy gets his name from Samuel Bellamy. Samuel Bellamy was a real pirate who sailed the seas in the early 1700s.[1]

[edit] Sarquiss

1st Mate (38,000,000 belli bounty)

The second mate of Bellamy the Hyena, Sarquiss (サーキース, Sākīsu) with a bounty of 38,000,000 for his head. Just like his captain, he strongly believes that a New Age is coming and laughs at anyone who mentions their dreams. He is often seen with a woman on his side, Lily. He is nick-named 'Big Knife', due to his large dagger (it bears a strong resemblance to a massive kukri). Donquixote Doflamingo seemingly forces Sarquiss to kill Bellamy after his defeat by Monkey D. Luffy. He is also notable for attempting to stop Luffy by challenging him to a fight after the latter recovered Montblanc Cricket's stolen gold. Once Luffy finally turns his attention on the remaining Bellamy Pirates, Sarquiss' resolve falters.

In the English version of the PS2/Gamecube game One Piece Pirates' Carnival, Sarquiss has been named "Sirkees". The "Big Knife" nickname is added on.

[edit] Other Crewmates

While they are not named in the anime nor the manga (excluding the Funimation Dub which called out the names of Ross, Eddy, and Lily), the names of Bellamy's crew appear in the One Piece Blue Data book. Below are some of the members of the crew who stood their ground after seeing Bellamy bested by Luffy.

  • Ross (ロス, Rosu): (Scott Cantrell) Fighter. Seen wearing similar attire to Braham from Skypeia.
  • Eddy (エヂ, Edi): (Andy Baldwin) Navigator. Wears spectacles. Determined the location of the Saruyama Alliance base for Bellamy. He reprimands Sarquiss for challenging Luffy in the anime. His status as the navigator is evident by the Log Pose on his right wrist.
  • Huett (ヒウエット, Hiuetto): Cook.
  • Rivers (リバス, Ribasu): (Patrick Seitz) Sniper. Seen wearing a hat with long ear-flaps. In the manga, Rivers, and not Eddy, stops Sarquiss from going after Luffy.
  • Mani (マニ, Mani): Female fighter. The curly-haired black-skinned beauty who was first seen side-by-side with Rivers.
  • Myure (ミュレ, Myure): Doctor. The curvy female wearing a tight-fitting yellow outfit and crosses decorated on her boots.
  • Lily (Trina Nishimura) (リリー, Rirī): Often seen at Sarquiss' side.

Note: These names are translated directly from Japanese and might not be the correct romanizations.

[edit] Crew Strength

Despite high confidence, the crew seems relatively weak compared to others in the Grand Line. The only notable fighters are Bellamy and Sarquiss, with Bellamy likely being the most skilled. Their strategy for attacking other pirates revolves around Bellamy and Sarquiss acting as the main attacking force while their weaker members deal with the already-beaten adversaries in their wake.

[edit] Other Information

Bellamy and crew operate under Shichibukai member Donquixote Doflamingo's flag. Doflamingo appears to maintain a great sense of pride in his flag, removing Bellamy from the crew for "dishonoring" it.
