Belinsky (Russian: Бели́нский) is a town and the administrative center of Belinsky District of Penza Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Bolshoy and Maly Chembar Rivers, 129 kilometers (80 mi) west of Penza. Population: 8,800 (2005 est.);[citation needed] 8,837 (2002 Census);[1] 9,028 (1989 Census).[2]
It was first mentioned in 1713. In 1780, it was granted town status and named Chembar (Чембар). In 1798 it was abolished, but in 1801 it was re-instated as a town. In 1948, it was renamed after Vissarion Belinsky who spent his childhood here.
