Belgrave is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Belgrave, on the Belgrave railway line of which it is the terminus. Belgrave is classed a Premium Station and is in Metcard Zone 2

The station is located at the southern end of the Belgrave-Gembrook Road overpass and between Main Street and the station's car park. The famous Puffing Billy railway is a short walk from the station, which can be accessed via an entrance at the DOWN end of the station.

[edit] Facilities

The station consists of two dead end platforms, in an island format. The island platform contains a large fibro building with a waiting room and a ticket office inside. A large Metcard machine is located inside the waiting room, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. Also in the waiting room is a manual service window whose staff can dispense tickets and advice on services. A footbridge and stabling facilities are located at the UP end of the station.

Both platforms can be accessed via Main Street and the station's car park.

[edit] History

Belgrave station originally opened on Tuesday, 18th December 1900 as Monbulk. It was renamed to Belgrave in 1904. The station was formally one of the stations on the Upper Ferntree Gully – Gembrook narrow gauge line, one of the narrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways until 1962 when the line as far as Belgrave was converted to Broad Gauge. The current is located further down the line than the previous narrow gauge station (which originally was in the proximity of the current stabling facilities).

This station is the end of the first (and only) stage of the original plan to convert and electrify the former narrow gauge line from Upper Ferntree Gully as far as Emerald. If one walks through the DOWN exit of the station towards the current Puffing Billy terminus, they could follow the shape and direction of the broad gauge lines into one line where the original narrow gauge line (now between Nos. 2 & 3 road of the Puffing Billy Railway sidings) continues to Gembrook. The overhead catenary lines continue beyond the broad gauge station for several metres.
