The Belgian Royal Escort is provided by units of the Federal Police. Prior to the merger of the Gendarmerie and Police, it was provided by the Gendarmerie. There are two royal escorts: the Royal Mounted Escort and the Royal Motorcycle Escort.
The Belgian monarchs have been accompanied by a Royal Mounted Escort on state occasions since Belgium's independence in 1830. Horsemen of the General Reserve of the Federal Police perform this mission these days. The 132 horsemen of the Belgian Royal Escort all ride Belgian horses.
On January 5, 1960, King Baudouin granted the Gendarmerie the privilege of creating a motorised unit tasked with escorting him and important guests. Nowadays, the Royal Motorcycle Escort is provided by the Provincial Traffic Unit Brabant of the Federal Police's Road Police.
