In 1994, the first ever elections for the office of President of Belarus took place. Before the adoption of the state constitution, Belaurs had a prime minister ever since they broke away from the Soviet Union. At the time, Vyachaslaw Kyebich was the prime minister. At the end of the first balloting in June of 1994, Kyebich was slated to face the other candidate, Alexander Lukashenko. In July, Lukashenko won the election with eighty percent of the vote.
