Beat the Star is an British game show airing on television network ITV. It is the British version of Schlag den Raab, a German game show that is internationally advertised as Beat your Host. A candidate who can beat a celebrity in a number of disciplines wins the jackpot, starting at £50,000. As of May 2008, it airs on ITV between 18:45 and 20:00 on Sundays.

Each episode features one contestant battling against a celebrity in a number of disciplines.[2] The games include sports contests such as climbing, motorsport, biathlon and ice hockey, puzzles and various other challenges.[3] The contestant can make £50,000. If the celebrity wins, the jackpot rolls over. Vernon Kay hosts the show that is produced by Gallowgate.[4]

The show is recorded in Cologne, Germany. A pilot was shot on November 5, 2007.[5]. Eight episodes were recorded during April 2008.[6] Members of the studio audience can win €500 or one of 20 tickets for German Schlag den Raab.[7] Candidates needed to be at least 18 years of age, have a driving licence and a passport.[8]

[edit] Differences between Beat the Star and Schlag den Raab
The running time of the original German version is at least four hours with up to 15 individual games, whereas the British version lasts only 75 minutes and only seven games are played. The German version is broadcast live and starts with the selection of one of five candidates by televoting. The British remake is pre-recorded.[12] In the German version, a member of the TV audience can win one or more cars, in the British version a member of the studio audience can win €500.[7] The British version features different celebrities, whereas the German version is centred on television entertainer and late show host Stefan Raab.[13] In the German version there's a jackpot starting with 500.000€. The highest prizemoney was 2,5 million Euros on 31 May 2008.
