"Be My Last" is Utada Hikaru's 14th Japanese single (19th overall). It was released on September 28, 2005 and was also her first Japanese single in 2005. This is the fifth single of Utada's to have a DVD Single as well, though the first single to have the DVD included in the single release as a CD+DVD package. This song was also the main theme for the movie "Haru no Yuki", or its English title, "Spring Snow", which is based on the novel by Yukio Mishima. This single signaled a new age to Utada's music, one with much more emotionally charged lyrics. The cover art was taken in Prague, Czech Republic. The large, dark building shown to the left is Hradcany Castle.
"Be My Last" reached #1 on the first day of its release on the Oricon chart, and stayed the number one single of the week post that day. To date, "Be My Last" has sold at least 150,000 physical copies. Part of these relatively low physical sales could be attributed to late promotion. In 2005, this single sold 143,916 units, making it the #70 single of 2005. However, the most recent sales figure is 150,928 units. Despite this single reaching #6 on the World Charts for single sales, this single did not even chart on the airplay chart. Utada Hikaru had five TV performances a month after it had been released due to her promotional work in Europe for the last Exodus album single, You Make Me Want to Be A Man, which delayed her performances. The timing of these lives has also fit in with the release of Haru no Yuki. Also planned with these live performances is an internet streaming of Be My Last available from Utada's Toshiba-EMI website. The streaming includes a performance as well as Utada answering a few questions from fans. It was available from the 11th until the 20th of November. On the television program performance at Music Station, Utada Hikaru was accompanied with a cello as background music for "Be My Last" instead of the CD version which she had used for the other performances. Aya Matsuura had also covered Be My Last on October 30, 2005.
Despite such low physical sales, "Be My Last" was a strong digital seller, becoming the #2 single of 2005 on iTunes Japan[1].
