BBC Radio York is the BBC Local Radio service for the English county of North Yorkshire.

BBC Radio York broadcasts from its studios in York on 95.5 (Olivers Mount, Scarborough), 103.7 (Acklam Wold near Leavening, midway between York and Driffield near the A166) and 104.3 (Woolmoor, near Upsall four miles north of Thirsk close to the A19 - for Harrogate, Northallerton and the Yorkshire Dales) FM, 666 (Fulford), 1260 (Row Brow, Scarborough) AM and by Real Player from their website. It is not on DAB yet. In the north, the BBC local radio stations use EMAP Digital multiplexes. There is an MXR (Chrysalis) multiplex broadcasting from Acklam Wold, who do not broadcast BBC stations.

Acklam Wold is the strongest frequency on 103.7 which is for Ryedale and the Vale of York, and the 140ft transmitter also has the commercial station, Minster FM on 104.7. The 103.7 signal can be heard as far south as Mansfield on the M1, and can be received in West and South Yorkshire. The transmitter used to broadcast on 90.2FM, and another on 97.2. The Olivers Mount transmitter also has Yorkshire Coast Radio on 96.2, as well as television and national radio frequencies. The Woolmoor transmitter has national radio frequencies.

The DAB licence that Radio York will use only covers the eastern part of North Yorkshire, York, and the north part of East Yorkshire (York and Scarborough). The licence was advertised in June 2007, and will be taken by MuxCo, as it submitted the only application in September 2007. It will be ready in June 2009.

[edit] Past Programming

Until 2007, BBC Radio York used to share many evening and weekend programmes with BBC Yorkshire including Martin Kelners Late Thing and The Alex Hall Late Night Phone In, they also took 'The Early Show' from BBC Radio Humberside, a station within the BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire region. The 'networking' of programmes has been cut back considerably to concentrate on more locally appealing programming. However, there are some specialist music shows such as 'Frank Wappat's Music', 'James Watt's Big Night Out' and 'John Caines Saturday Rock Show' which are shared with the BBC North East and Cumbria region.

BBC Radio York also used to be part of The BBC Night Network, a group of ten Northern BBC Local Radio stations which used to share programming every evening.

Former presenters at the station include ITV Sport commentator Jon Champion, Sky Sports commentator Rob Hawthorne and Bill Hanrahan - who went on to present Look North and report for Good Morning with Anne and Nick.

Radio York has two other claims to fame. Firstly, its launch, at 6.30am on 4 July 1983, was featured on the cover of Radio Times. Secondly, the station's AM transmitter of 666 kHz had been given permission to broadcast coverage of the Pope's visit to York a year earlier.

Also one other bit of trivia: Minster FM, York's commercial radio station, went on air nine years to the day after Radio York started broadcasting and Stray FM, which covers the Harrogate and Ripon areas started broadcasting eleven years to the day after Radio York went on air.

Recently, North Yorkshire district councils have criticised Radio York for over dramatising the flood of June 19, 2005, which led to the sudden drop of tourism in North Yorkshire for the remainder of 2005.
