[edit] Redirect to Star Trek: First Contact

I think the July 2007 redirect of Battle of Sector 001 to Star Trek: First Contact was premature and unwarranted. Given that I can find no discussion of the redirect on this talk page, I am reverting to the previous article under a fair interpretation of Wikipedia:Deletion_policy#Deletion_review as the redirect was accompanied by deletion of the existing content without discussion.

Now, to address the reasoning presented for the deletion/redirect.

This is a chunk of Star Trek: First Contact, in near-plagiaristic detail. This flunks WP:FICT and WP:WAF and WP:NOT#PLOT, so let's redirect it somewhere relevant
  • WP:FICT - this is a proposed policy anyway... but the Battle of Sector 001 is notable outside the context of the First Contact film.
    • for one, there are about 20 Wikipedia pages which link to Battle of Sector 001. 13 of those links are to articles, all of which describe aspects of the Star Trek Universe, but none of which are specific to First Contact. Following the links from these articles and ending up in First Contact makes no sense...
    • This could be corrected, but the text of Star Trek: First Contact does not even mention "The Battle of Sector 001" because that's not what the film is about. There are all of two sentences which reference the battle.
    • This is a distinct (fictional) event which is referenced in multiple works of fiction occurring in the Star Trek universe.
    • The name is commonly used to identify that battle... Google gives 2,140 hits, many to to video or discussions of this battle.
  • WP:WAF and WP:NOT#PLOT are not really a reason for deleting content... rewrite or state what you think is wrong with the text.
    • Honestly, looking at the article as it was in June 2007, about a third is plot summary, a third is contributed details (which ships, etc.), and a third is context to the rest of Star Trek (role in the Borg conflict, what is canon).
    • Sure, it is far from a perfect article... and maybe some of the content belongs on Memory Alpha instead, but there is merit in providing at least some information on Wikipedia.
  • Battle of Sector 001 is not only referenced in other Wikipedia articles, but also out of the web. It is a reasonable search term for someone to enter into a search engine or directly into Wikipedia. However, getting redirected to an article that provides no information about the Battle of Sector 001 is pointless.
  • Other fictional battles get similar treatment:
    • Battle_of_the_Cowshed from Orwell's Animal Farm - while I don't want to try comparing the cultural impact of Animal Farm and Star Trek... under the same approach, Battle_of_the_Cowshed would redirect to Animal_Farm with no explanation.
    • Battle of the Hornburg - never heard of this name for it... usually called the Battle of Helm's Deep, but still...
    • Battle_of_Hulao_Pass
    • and most of the known Star Wars battles have pages: Battle of Endor, etc...
  • Finally, other war events of similar scope and importance in the Star Trek universe do currently have separate articles Category:Star_Trek_wars_and_battles, including: Battle of Wolf 359 with clear relevance here, Temporal_Cold_War, Dominion_War,
    • Of course, Battle_of_Procyon_Five is a counter-example, as it also forwards into an article where a casual reader needs to read carefully to understand the connection.
    • Battle_of_Cheron#22nd_century does this slightly better... at least it brings you to the right section.
    • Battle_of_Bajor goes to an episode summary... but the actual words "Battle_of_Bajor" only occur in a photo caption... so that is less than ideal.
    • Now, I have to agree that much beyond those already listed, other Star Trek "Battle of"s are probably best kept to the Memory Alpha space.

So, I welcome discussion on why the contents of this article should be deleted, and why this name should be redirected. --Marcinjeske (talk) 00:40, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Results of the Battle

"...in the explosion of the cube. Following its victory, the Borg..." -- you mean its defeat? (If it was a Borg victory, the movie would have been a lot shorter.)

in the voyager series there is an episode where Seven's former borgbuddies show up, one of them used to serve on Excalibur and hints it was assimilated at this battle.

[edit] Millennium Falcon

Doesn't the Millennium Falcon have a cameo appearance in this battle? (see the Millennium Falcon article, towards the end) David 11:46, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vice Admiral Hayes

Although Riker reports in the film that his ship has been destroyed, Hayes later appears in Voyager's "Hope and Fear" and "Life Line". As such, don't add the † symbol after his name. --EEMeltonIV 03:39, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
