[edit] Order of battle

Regarding the complaint posted on the order of battle: The list badly needed to be wikified, and I tried to organize things by squadron (to avoid a duplicate long list of ships in the middle of the article). I did not realize the original order was important; my apologies. I have a long weekend vacation coming up; is no-one has fixed the article before i come back, I plan to put the ships back in a table with column headings as follows:

  1. Order
  2. Name
  3. Type
  4. Captain
  5. Squadron
  6. Comments

Will this do? Sysin 15:48, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ok, I have added a table with the Russian ships (in order) listed. I think all the information is now in there but in case I missed something the old text is below. I don't think there is enough info for a table for the Turkish - I'll work the information into the text.

==Ships involved:==
On 5 July, the battleships came into action in the order listed:
===Russia (Count Orlov)===
  • Orlov's squadron
    • Battleship:
      • Tri Ierarcha 66 (flag of Count Orlov, captain Greig)
    • Bomb Ship:
      • Grom 12
  • Spiridov's squadron
    • Battleships:
      • Evropa 66 (captain Klokatchev)
      • Sv. Evstafii 68 (captain Kruse) - Blew up, 5 July
      • Tri Svyatitelya 66
      • Sv. Ianuarii 66
      • Rostislav 68
    • Frigate
    • Sv. Nikolai 26/38?
  • Elphinston's squadron
    • Battleships:
      • Ne tron menya 66
      • Saratov 66
      • Svyatoslav 84 (Elphinston)
    • Frigates:
      • Afrika 32
      • Nadezhda 32
    • Armed merchant ships possibly involved:
      • Sv. Pavel 8 (pink) or Potchtalon 14 (despatch vessel)
      • Graf Tchernyshev 22 (hired English)
      • Graf Panin 18 (hired English)
      • Graf Orlov 18 (hired English)
  • Other
    • Fireships: (about 718 guns, total)

      • ? (Prince Gagarin) - Stayed out
      • A number of Greek armed merchant and pirate ships
===Turkey (Hosameddin)===
Details uncertain - about 1300 guns total
  • Real Mustafa 84 (Hassan Pasha) - Blew up, 5 July
  • Rodos 60 - Captured, 7 July
  • ? 100 (flag of Hosameddin?) - Burnt, 7 July
  • 11-13 other battleships - Burnt, 7 July
  • 6 frigates - Burnt, 7 July

[edit] More info

I found a history of the Russian Navy with a page on the Battle of Chesma. This may be useful for fact checking and giving sources. Does anybody have better references? Andreww 23:42, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

My reference is the "Naval Battles in the Levant 1559-1853" for all of the battles in this area. Most battles don't seem to be even mentioned anywhere else, let alone described in detail. I prefer a table or list showing both fleets, rather than the way the page is now, with one in a table and one in the text, but oh well. SpookyMulder 15:06, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
