Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands is a reality television programme which is broadcast on Channel 4 on the popular teenage segment T4 and is produced by RDF Media. The original premise of the show was a social experiment for young adults before the big hit of Big Brother at the start of 2000. However there were several Shipwrecked projects before Battle of the Islands started hosted primarily by Andi Peters but has changed to a narration from Craig Kelly

[edit] Premise

The show has no overall presenter, and is narrated overlooking both tribes in a seven day cycle in which ten (soon to turn into thirty) castaways are placed on the Cook Islands in Polynesia and divided into two competing teams known as tribes and have been given basic survival tools to survive with: commonly a machete and several other items. The tribes are encouraged to build shelters to defend themselves from harsh elements and live off the local flora for nourishment. However both tribes are given canned food stuffs and a large quantity of rice.

Initial tribal divisions are based on what the producers believed to be a fair assumption and a rough distribution of age. In the first season there was a team of 3 girls and 2 boys against 3 boys and 2 girls, the second season saw a different dynamic in which the tribes were divided by their gender.

As apart of a tribe each member must wear a tribal necklace on them at all times to let the viewers at home know what tribe they are watching. The rule applies if a contestant decides to switch as he/she must wear the new necklace.

The competition lasts for five months and whichever tribe has the most members by the end of the run will win £70,000.

[edit] Challenges

During the five months on the island there are challenges for the tribes to compete against. Unlike other shows that involve dexterity and will power the tribes compete in pontoon races to obtain luxury items such as a portable shower and chocolate or a new wreckee.

Challenges are never announced to the tribes and are signalled by a loud blaring horn that can be set off at any point during the day or night. To make things fair between the rival islands they can only send one person to swim for the prize, in the case of a group pontoon prize they must build a flotation device for all tribe members to ferry on.

[edit] Tribal Swap

In the seasons that have passed, island swapping is vital for both tribes. For each islander that joins the castaways they are entitled two island swaps, after that they must stay as a permanent member of the island until the game ends (or he/she decides to leave).

Nominations can only occur on the weekly beach party after the new arrival has decided the tribe they wish to stay on. After that public nominations are made and only the person wishing to nominate can, that person must then plead a case to the opposing island. The rival island must unanimously decide if the nominated person will join or not. If more than one person chooses to nominate themselves then the opposing island must decide on one islander to take back to the camp with them.

In one case, during Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands 2006 there was a punishment for both islands for breaking rules and 'kidnapping' a current member of the Tiger Tribe, also for stepping foot on the opposing island without permission. Thus leading to a permanent island swap for one member of each tribe.

[edit] Prizes

The winning tribe receives £70,000 to split between the members. In the second season a second competition known as Shipwrecker of the Year began which allowed the public to vote for their favourite castaway to win an additional £15,000 with the top three men and women going into the live final at the reunion of the shows climax. There has been no word of any consolation prizes with regards to the losing team.

[edit] End of the game

After the show finishes its airing on Channel 4 all of the castaways (including those who voluntarily left) to return for a reunion show to talk about their experiences. The results of Shipwrecker of the Year are also announced (as of the 2007 edition)

[edit] Rules of Shipwrecked

  • Island moving is strictly prohibited (except for an island swap) except at the weekly beach party which takes place on alternate islands.
  • If a Shipwrecker becomes dissatisfied with their particular community and wants to move to the rival island permanently, then they can nominate themselves at the beach party (but at no other place or time).
  • Only if the inhabitants of the rival island agree to accept them to their island - by a majority vote - are they allowed to move.
  • If they are not accepted then they must stay and reside with their current group. If they are still intent on moving they will have to wait until the next beach party to put their case forward again.
  • If two or more people put themselves forward for nomination from one island, then the rival island are only permitted to accept one nominee per week, unless open group nominations are announced.
  • There must always be a minimum of five people living on an island at any time and nominations are only permitted if an island has six or more people in their tribe.
  • Only two island moves are permitted per person during the series.

[edit] Shipwrecked: Battle of the Island Seasons

  1. Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands 2006 (or simply Shipwrecked) was the first Shipwrecked under the new rules of competing islands and was filmed in August-December 2005 and released in February 2006. The winning tribe were the Sharks who won 15-14.
  2. Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands 2007 was the second Shipwrecked under the new rules. The filming dates were the same as last year's and first broadcast on the anniversary of the first season.
