[edit] Original series
In 1978, Mattel released a handheld electronic game called Battlestar Galactica Space Alert based on the original Battlestar Galactica film and television series.
Mattel also developed a game for its Intellivision game platform which was probably intended to be an official Battlestar Galactica game, but it did not have the legal right to market such a game. The game was released instead under the more generic name Space Battle, although it retains hallmarks of the series, including Cylon-style robots.[citation needed]
The 1978 Battlestar Galactica series inspired a video game for Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox in which the player plays as Commander Adama as a younger man, and flies a number of missions in different craft against Cylon ships. The game follows Adama's career during the first Cylon Wars. It retains many design elements from the 1978 series.
