A battlefield promotion or field promotion is an advancement in rank within the military that occurs generally while deployed in combat.
[edit] Types of Battlefield Promotion
- A standard promotion is advancement from current rank to the next highest rank.
- A jumpstep promotion is advancement from current rank to a rank higher than the next highest rank
- A battlefield commission is advancement from a position of enlistment, usually that of a non-commissioned officer to a commissioned officer, generally O-1, also known as Second Lieutenant, or Ensign in the Navy or Coast Guard. Battlefield commissions are awarded on the basis of merit and demonstration of leadership and do not require the subject to attend Officer Training School or Officer Candidate School.

The term 'battlefield promotion' is the informal term used in professional golf for the performance promotion of a golfer who wins three times in one season on the Nationwide Tour to the main PGA Tour. Those who succeed in this are exempt through the balance of the year on the PGA Tour and again for the entirety of the following season.
