Battle of the Three Navies

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of the Three Navies is a fictional battle between the navies of the United States and those of Great Britain and Japan in Harry Turtledove's Southern Victory (Timeline-191) series during the Great War (World War I). It is equivalent in importance to the Battle of Jutland in our timeline.

The battle was fought in early July of 1916[1] south of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), which the U.S. had seized from Great Britain in 1914 at the beginning of the Great War. The battle was a tactical draw, with both sides loosing ships, (the cruiser USS Missoula is the only ship to be sunk specifically named in the book[2]) however, it turned out to be a strategic victory for the U.S., as they were able to keep the British and Japanese fleets from attacking the Sandwich Islands.

The most notable event in the battle was the "Death Ride of the battleship USS Dakota,"[3] whose steering gear became jammed due to British gunfire during the battle. The Dakota was forced to veer sharply to port, barely missing a collision with the USS Idaho, and then sailed between the Allied and American battle lines (probably a reference to the behaviour of the HMS Warspite during the Battle of Jutland). The battleship survived the action with noted fanfare.
