The Battle of Tashkessen was a battle of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. It was fought between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire on December 28, 1877. The battle occurred after Shakir Pasha's retirement and near Taşkesen (now Sarantsi, Bulgaria). The Russian forces were commanded by General Kourlov, while the Turkish forces were commanded by Valentine Baker, a British-born general. The battle resulted in a Russian victory but with heavy casualties.
