In the Battle of Rhandeia during the Roman-Parthian War of 58–63, the Romans under the legate of Cappadocia, Lucius Caesennius Paetus, were defeated by a Parthian-Armenian army under King Tiridates I of Armenia.

The Parthians had placed Tiridates, the brother of their king Vologases I on the Armenian throne, which had belonged to Tigranes, a Roman ally. A retaliatory campaign was organized by Caesennius Paetus, the governor of Cappadocia, in 62, with legions XII Fulminata and IIII Scythica, but Tiridates forced them into surrender at Rhandeia (autumn 62).
