The Battle of May Street was a huge battle that took place in 1855 in what is now known as Scotchtown, Nova Scotia. It was one of many battles in the area, but the most famous of them all. The Irish had occupied the area for over 40 years and called the community Irishtown, Nova Scotia. The Scots invaded the area on May 11th, 1855 and a battle ensued. The Irish were chased up the road by angry Scots with sticks and stones causing them to cross to the north side of the Sydney & Louisburg Railway tracks for good. It was at that time that the Irish formed the community of New Victoria, Nova Scotia. To this day, not another battle was ever had between the two communities.
