In July 1862, Stand Watie turned on John Ross and the Cherokees who opposed Watie's support for the Confederate States. He attacked the Cherokee capitol at Talequah. Ross fled to Philadelphia where he pledged support for the United States in the American Civil War. Watie would continue to fight even after the Civil War ends, and is the last to surrender.
