Battle of Lepanto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Three battles have been known as the Battle of Lepanto:
- Battle of Lepanto (1499), an Ottoman victory during the Ottoman-Venetian Wars
- Battle of Lepanto (1500), an Ottoman victory during the Ottoman-Venetian Wars
- Battle of Lepanto (1571), a Holy League defeat of the Ottoman fleet, by far the most famous of the three
An earlier battle near modern Lepanto was called the Battle of Naupactus (429 BC).
Four paintings entitled the Battle of Lepanto are all of the 1571 Battle:
- the Battle of Lepanto by Paolo Veronese in the Doge's Palace in Venice
- the Battle of Lepanto by Andrea Vicentino in the Doge's Palace in Venice
- the Battle of Lepanto by an unknown artist (shown right)
- the Battle of Lepanto by Carpoforo Tencala in the Dominikanerkirche in Vienna (1676)
