[edit] The Battle

In the course of Union reconnaissance efforts in the Fredericksburg area, General Sedgwick's Federal VI Corps engages Confederates in what becomes intensive fighting between the two armies on June 5, 1863. The skirmishing soon becomes severe fighting in this attack that becomes the "Battle of Franklin's Crossing," or "Deep Run Battle."

The Federals clashed with Southerners in strongly defended trenches. Following this battle the Confederates continued to be very much in control of Fredericksburg along with much of the area. The Union forces captured 35 troops and wounded another 35. The Southerners also had 6 dead on the field. There remained a considerable dispute among Federal commanders as to the course of action with which to proceed.

[edit] Aftermath

General Lee eluded capture.
